Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Predicts Arrival of “Powerful AI” by 2026

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has shared his thoughts on the race to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI), preferring to refer to it as “powerful AI” to distance it from science fiction connotations. In an essay posted on Anthropic’s website, Amodei outlined his vision for a world driven by this emerging form of AI, one in which “everything goes right.”

While leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Google, and Meta, are all competing to be the first to achieve AGI, there is no consensus on its precise definition. Amodei criticized the way some AI risk public figures and company leaders discuss the post-AGI world, cautioning against viewing companies as unilaterally shaping the world or treating technological goals as religious missions.

Amodei’s preferred term, “powerful AI,” encompasses several defining properties. He describes it as being smarter than a Nobel Prize winner across most relevant fields, capable of multimodal interaction, independent task completion, abstract existence, replicability, fast information processing, and cooperative behavior. Amodei believes this form of AI could materialize as early as 2026, envisioning it as “a country of geniuses in a datacenter.”
