In a recently surfaced audio recording, GOP Senate nominee Hung Cao can be heard making disparaging remarks about NATO employees. The comments have raised concerns about Cao’s qualifications to run for political office.
Cao’s assessment of NATO as lazy and unproductive is both misguided and unfounded. As someone who has served in the Army for 31 years and currently works with Joint Force Command Norfolk, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated officers, non-commissioned officers, and civilians from NATO. They are hardworking individuals committed to the mission of ensuring global security and cooperation.
Criticizing our allies in such a manner seems to be a ploy to gain support from former President Donald Trump. However, it is important to recognize the sacrifices made by countless individuals in past wars to create a safer world and establish a network of mutual support against authoritarian regimes. Going back to isolationist policies would be a step backward.
It is worth noting that Cao fails to discuss any positive contributions he would make in representing Virginia. This raises questions about his priorities and focus as a political candidate.
As a Lessons Learned staff officer at NATO Joint Force Command Norfolk, I express my personal opinion that Cao’s remarks do not reflect the reality of NATO’s hardworking employees. I will be casting my vote for Senator Tim Kaine, who has demonstrated a commitment to effective leadership and international cooperation.
In a separate letter, a reader argues against the continuation of cat-trapping with no return in Hampton. They advocate for an effective trap, neuter, and return program, which not only helps reduce animal population but also ensures the testing and vaccination of feral cats against diseases. The letter emphasizes that such programs are primarily funded by volunteers and charitable organizations, minimizing the burden on taxpayers. The writer suggests that euthanizing feral cats simply for existing is unnecessary and advocates for a more compassionate approach.
Another letter highlights reasons to vote for former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election. The writer expresses a desire for government spending cuts, stricter border control, and experienced leadership. They also voice concerns about the current trend of using government agencies to hinder Trump’s campaign. While acknowledging Trump’s polarizing nature, the writer believes his policies align with their priorities.
In a separate opinion piece, the focus shifts to Vice President Kamala Harris. The writer suggests that Trump and his supporters are attempting to demonize and destroy Harris as a liberal politician and a woman of mixed ethnicity. They highlight Trump’s false claims about Harris using artificial intelligence to inflate crowd sizes and question her eligibility for the vice presidency. The writer points out Trump’s history of denigrating and demeaning women, particularly those perceived as strong and competent. They speculate that Harris may prove to be Trump’s political downfall.
