The AI-powered DJ, modeled after Xavier “X” Jernigan, Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, offers users a personalized music experience by analyzing their listening habits, preferences, and mood. Beyond creating custom playlists, DJ X engages with users, providing interesting facts and personalized commentary about artists and genres.
Xavier Jernigan, who previously hosted Spotify’s successful podcast “The Get Up,” was approached by the company’s head of personalization to become the voice model for the AI DJ. Jernigan’s extensive experience in the music industry, including his roles at major labels such as Def Jam Recordings and Republic Records, adds authenticity and credibility to DJ X’s recommendations.
To train the AI DJ, Spotify utilized Sonantic’s dynamic text-to-speech AI voice platform and OpenAI technologies. Nearly 300 episodes of “The Get Up” were used to analyze Jernigan’s speech patterns, pitch, pacing, and emotions. Jernigan also provided a list of phrases he commonly uses when discussing music, enabling the AI DJ to mimic his natural voice inflections accurately.
Jernigan’s involvement extends beyond voice modeling. He holds regular meetings with a global team of writers, music experts, and data curators to ensure the AI DJ stays up to date with current trends and music news. This collaborative effort allows the AI DJ to provide users with real-time information and maintain a dynamic and engaging experience.
Since its initial launch in the U.S. and Canada, DJ X has expanded to 68 markets worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. The positive reception from Spotify users has been overwhelming, with Jernigan even being recognized on the streets of London and Sydney.
Spotify’s commitment to innovation is evident as they recently introduced DJ Livi, a Spanish-speaking AI DJ modeled after the voice of Olivia Quiroz Roa, the company’s senior music editor. Premium users in select markets now have the option to switch between DJ Livi and DJ X, offering a bilingual music commentary experience.
Despite the expansion and introduction of new AI DJs, Xavier Jernigan assures listeners that he will continue to be the voice of DJ X for the foreseeable future. Spotify remains dedicated to evolving and improving the AI DJ experience, ensuring that users continue to connect with the human behind the AI.
